We asked our crew a few questions so you could get to know them. Here are their answers.
Your two favourite Sci Fi shows and why you like them?
The first must be Doctor Who. What always used to scare me as a kid was not just the Daleks themselves but that vibrating modulating noise that you used to hear in the corridors of their space craft.
The Doc’s police box was fascinating. It was massive on the inside but smaller on the outside, now which other sci-fi show had anything close to that for weirdness? wouldn't it be great if our houses were like that ! Then there was the Doc himself. He came from a mysterious race called the time lords that were happy to stay on their home world but the Doctor wanted to actually travel in time and see all these creatures in the universe, he longed to investigate the planets. So the whole show had all these exciting elements. What I also like about the latest Doctor Who is there are fast, pace and the money has been spent. The monsters are no longer a piece of seaweed being dragged around on a piece of string. I swear, there was a Tom Baker story where this happen. What was it called ? If you know or want to chat about stuff, email geoff AT a51radio.com. Of course change the word AT for @. This is to stop spammers
Star Trek is a phenomenon. In the beginning there was all action captain Kirk counter pointed against the logical and to use one of his own words, fascinating Mr Spock. I like the whole franchise but Next Generation has to be a favourite. I’m currently watching the whole lot again. No, not in one sitting ! What I find is amazing is how it’s grown into Next generation, Enterprise, DS nine and Voyager. How many other sci-fi series or any series for that matter has had so many offspring! It’s phenomenal.
I have to mention Serenity. The Captain is a good character and so is the rest of the ships crew. I get a load of that music. Sounds like something from a movie about the Wild West, unusual, interesting. Have a watch, and tell me if you liked it as much as I did. Email Geoff
Favourite Sci-Fi Character
It has to be Doctor Who as I grew up with him. He cares deeply for the human race but he’s not perfect. He can appear to be observing things and becomes a bit detached like some eccentric professor when he should be taking action which has been known to infuriated his assistants.
I also liked the doctor in lost in space. The guy was only out for himself and a real coward but made for a memorable character. He was always trying to manipulate others to be part of his schemes. If that didn’t work he changed the programming of the robot, who was powerful and forced the rest of the crew to do things
I also enjoyed the robot from lost in space. Wasn’t he always shouting danger, danger and waving his arms around like a windmill spun around by a hurricane.
The funniest, strangest thing that ever happened to you in past work
I was doing a late night show for a local radio station and we had one of these love zone things. You know, where you play an hour of love songs and Bryan Adams, everything I do I do for you came up and I really thirsted for a cup of coffee. So as the song goes on forever, I though great I can get that cup of coffee. Now the kitchen was up three floors up but lucky you can hear the music in there. Guess what? The cd got stuck. It kept playing the same note over and over again. I flew down three flights of stairs, banged my knees several times. Almost caught my head in the heavy studio door, then sat behind the microphone and carried on with show as if nothing had happened !
Your most exciting presenting or writing experience?
Area 51 Radio Station’s live broadcast from the London Excel Centre for the London Expo We had an audience of 30,000 people over the weekend plus all the listeners around the world. The show was exciting and fast. Meeting the listeners was a buzz. A real adrenaline pumped broadcast.
Anything you'd like listeners to email you about?
Any funny sci-fi observations you’ve noticed, like the fact that the guy wearing the red jersey always gets zapped when he’s beamed down to a planet in Star Trek or the fact that in Star Trek Next Generation which is set in the future they don’t get paid, so why are they flying about in the Enterprise ? What they could be doing instead is sitting at home watching telly and having lots of curries and wild nights out ! Suzie the Floozy often pops in on my show, of you have a message for her email and I'll pass it onto her, perhaps you'd like to ask her about her pole dancing in the studio !
